In 1812 a duel was fought near Newtownmountkennedy between Bryan Maguire Esq and a Mr. Burr. In this duel Mr. Burr was shot dead and Mr. Maguire was badly wounded. Mr. Maguire was alive but had six slugs in his left arm. Mr. Maguire after the duel surrendered himself to the High Sheriff of the County, in order to face trial at the next Assizes.

It hard to prove but Mr. Bryan Maguire may have been the noted duelist Bryan Butler Maguire who was alive in this period of time, who was born in County Fermanagh.
