The author and journalist Robert Sampson Elegant was born in March 1928 in New York, the son of Louis and Lillie Rebeca nee Sampson. He married Moira Clarissa Brady in 1956. He studied at the University of Pennsylvania before going onto Yale University. He started out his career as a journalist working for newspapers such as the Los Angeles Times and the New York Times. In 1976 he became the visiting Professor of the University of Carolina. For several years he resided at Loongshan House in Greystones Co Wicklow. Now divides his time between England and Italy.
His works included the fictional works such as Dynasty (1977), A Kind of Treason (1966), The seeking (1969) and The Everlasting Sorrow (1994). Other works included Mao v Chiang The Battle for China (1972), and The Centre of the World (1961). He won the Edgar Allan Poe Award in 1967.
