Archibald James Potter was born in Belfast in September 1918. He was the son of Piano Tuner Arthur George Potter and Claire (nee McMaster). He studied at the Royal College of Music, where he studied composition under the composer Vaughan Williams. Potter the Festival off Britain (Northern Ireland) Prize in 1951 for his work “Missa Brevis” and the Radio Eireann Carolan Prize in 1952 and 1953. In 1955 he was appointed professor of music at the Royal Irish Academy of Music. He died at his home on Bethel Terrace in Greystones in 1980, at just 61 years of age.

His noted works included works of opera, ballet and orchestral and chamber music. These include ‘Rhapsody Under a High Sky for Orchestra’ (1950), ‘Sinfonia de Profundis (Symphony No. 1) (1969) and ‘A Hundred Thousand Welcomes (1972 – 74).
